Went straight to #1 when it debuted on streaming platform Netflix in America and retained the top spot for 3 consecutive days - July 12, 13 & 14, 2016 - before Stranger Things (2016) premiered on July 15 and knocked it to 2nd place.
Andrew Simpson replaced Freddie Highmore (who is given a special thanks credit) for the role of Jack, due to scheduling conflicts with filming of Bates Motel (2013)
Although the film is set in France, most of the interiors were filmed in England. A majority of the exteriors however were filmed in France though some select sequences were shot in Kent, England as the landscapes used are interchangeable.
The idea for the story came to director Abner Pastoll in summer 2001 while traveling in France, when he was staying in a "creepy mansion." It wasn't until late 2008 that he finally started developing it into a feature screenplay, which was completed in 2011. It took a further 3 years for financing and casting before filming began on July 20, 2014 - almost 13 years to the day he originally thought about the idea.
The role of Grizard was written specifically with Frédéric Pierrot in mind.
