Made by the South Australian Film Corporation during the mini-series boom of the 1980s and lensed in the Flinders Ranges, it stars Sam Neill as the infamous Captain Starlight.

The production involved 120 crew, 148 actors, 200 locations, 1200 cattle and 2000 extras.

This production is the longest version of the four adaptations of the "'Robbery Under Arms' novel by Rolf Boldrewood.

Fifth and final film of five theatrical feature films that British television director Ken Hannam made in Australia. Hannam's first four films were Sunday Too Far Away (1975), Break of Day (1976), Summerfield (1977), and Dawn! (1979).

This filmed production was released both as a theatrical feature film and as a television mini-series.
