Gary Oldman stated in a 2012 interview that he headed immediately to the set of True Romance (1993) the day after wrapping on this film. The final scene was actually shot last, and he states that in the scene, he already has the "swagger" of his True Romance (1993) pimp character Drexl Spivey, prompting his then-girlfriend to suggest he do another take.
The film's title is taken from a Tom Waits song. In the end credits he receives "special thanks" for its use.
According to Bon Jovi's "100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't be Wrong" collection, Jon Bon Jovi mentioned in the confession book that he was asked to write the song "Always" for this film. He was given a private screening of the movie with the song included, but hated it so much that he exercised his right to pull it from the film. Later, the song became Bon Jovi's biggest selling single at the time. The song never did appear in the soundtrack or the film. Jon does not consider the song a love song. He refers to its narrator as "one screw-less Looney Toon".
Gary Oldman broke a rib after taking a fall during a fight sequence and landing on his elbow.
Lena Olin performed her own stunts for the car scene, including crawling from the backseat to the front, kicking out the windshield and crawling through it, rolling off the car's hood, then running down the street, all while handcuffed and in heels. The sequence was originally going to be shot with stunt woman Janet Paparazzo but Olin said that after watching Paparazzo and Peter Medak working on the scene, she approached Medak and asked him if she could do it herself. Olin recalled: "He said 'Of course, fine,' and it was fun. I mean, I'm a chicken and would never risk anything, but it worked."
"Jack Grimaldi: So you're the big hoodlum? Personally, I don't see it. Mona Demarkov: Keep lookin'."
"Jack Grimaldi: People think that Hell is fire and brimstone and the Devil poking you in the butt with a pitchfork, but it's not. Hell is when you should have walked away, but you didn't."
