This was director David R. Ellis' final film. On January 7, 2013, Ellis's body was found in the bathroom of his hotel room in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was preparing to direct Kite at the time. No cause of death has been released; however, police say no foul play was suspected.
The first shark movie released in 3D ever since Jaws 3-D (1983) 28 years prior.
Although the movie was always going to be titled "Shark Night 3D" overseas, director David R. Ellis fought for a name change for the North American release, at one point wanting to release the film under the title "Untitled Shark Thriller 3D".
Not screened in advance for critics.
When the sheriff tells Nick that it's a tiger shark and they'll eat anything, license plates and tin cans. That is exactly what is pulled out of the tiger shark by Brody and Hooper in "Jaws."
"Sara Palski: Hey! Nick: Sara! Sara Palski: Room for one more? Nick: [as he's moving boxes to make room] Yeah totally. Right there, no problem. Sara Palski: Cool. [Sara snaps her fingers and her dog barks and jumps in the back] Sara Palski: Good boy! You guys have fun back there. Gordon: Not quite, uh, what we had in mind there Sara. But... [Sara closes the boot of the car before Gordon finishes]"
"Dennis Crim: A cookie cutter shark. The normal dive is nothing more than skin, blubber - flesh! Beth: Get me out of here!"
