Actress Elizabeth of Toro who played the Shaman was a Ugandan princess in real life. She was also a Cambridge law graduate, a model (the first black woman to appear on Vogue magazine) and was appointed by Idi Amin to be Uganda's Foreign Minister ..
Tanya Roberts as Sheena seems to ride a zebra in this movie. It is actually a small horse wearing "make-up" so it resembles a zebra.
Star Tanya Roberts said of this movie for the film's publicity: "It was the hardest film I've ever worked on but at the same time the most gratifying. It was so amazingly beautiful in Africa, the wildlife, the sunrises and sunsets, the skies, the land, and the people".
The movie was made and released about forty-seven years after its source comic strip "Sheena, Queen of the Jungle" by Will Eisner and Jerry Iger and had been first published in 1937. Both comic book creators went uncredited in the picture's billing.
Another problem the filmmakers faced was the length of time it took to get the dailies back from London, which was the closest place to have the film processed. It took two weeks before the dailies arrived back in Africa and by that time the crew would have moved on to another location. Director John Guillermin and his crew had to hope that everything they shot was right the first time around.
"Sheena: See! Even in chains, we can defeat them! Turn your minds back, my people. Remember yourselves a thousand, a thousand moons ago! Bring your bows!"
"Sheena: I am not a foolish young girl, Viccasey. The Shaman taught me that brave tales do not always have happy endings. I know what guns can do. I know that you and I may not live to see another sunset. [Vic walks up to her and kisses her on the mouth] Sheena: You are an enemy! Vic Casey: I'm what? Sheena: The Shaman taught me. An enemy is one who takes without asking. Vic Casey: I'll ask then. May I? Sheena: [quietly] Yes."
