The film was originally intended to have a theatrical release. However, because of the big similarities with the much more popular Scary Movie (2000) (which was actually filmed after this film), it ended up being released direct to video. In the DVD's audio commentary, the actors refer to it as "that other movie" without ever saying the title.
Aimee Graham plays a character named Screw in this film, which is a spoof of Drew Barrymore's character in Scream (1996). In Scream 2 (1997), Heather Graham (Aimee's older sister) plays the Hollywoodized version of Barrymore's character in the film-within-a-film, "Stab". Renée Graham (their other sister) also appears in this movie as a character named Amber.
Shot at the same school as Jawbreaker (1999).
The melting mask gag at the beginning of the film was a re-shoot. Originally, it was the Jason Voorhees mask, but it would not catch fire good enough to look like it melted into the Ghostface mask, so an alternative mask was decided on.
Principal Interest refers to the previous principal as Mr Winkler. Henry Winkler played Principal Himbry in Scream (1996).
"PA: [voice-over] Would the following students please report to the Principal's office: Jack Mehoff, Mike Hunt, Lou Zer, and Heywood Jablomee."
"Killer: Do you like scary movies? Screw: Oh. What, you mean like Spike Lee movies? Killer: Look, lay off the Spikester! He's keeping it real!"
