Whitney Houston was also one of five executive producers on the movie, having acquired remake rights around the year 2000. Her original plan was to have singer Aaliyah star as Sparkle, until the singer died in a plane crash in August 2001.
Whitney Houston's last film - she died during post production. The picture was to be an acting comeback for the singer, who had not appeared in a theatrical release since The Preacher's Wife (1996) in 1996. The film is dedicated to her memory.
Just like the original film, the plot for this film was inspired by the Motown recording group The Supremes who would later be named "Diana Ross and The Supremes".
Raven-Symoné was considered for the role of Sparkle Williams.
Unfortunately, this film was also the last film of Stephanie Moseley who passed away on December 8, 2014.
"Satin: Oh Rev, I bet you know a little bit more about making dollars off of people's pain. You packing 'em in the church every Sunday. Giving 'em a show, got 'em hootin' and hollerin'. Yeah, you know what Rev, the only difference between me and you, is you collect your fee at the pew. I collect mine at the door."
