The movie is based on short story written in 1844 by Edgar Allan Poe, "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether".
The phrase on the wall of the nursing when Eliza Graves (Kate Beckinsale) assists Doctor Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess) is: "What makes a man ill, also cures him."
When Dr. Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess) is dining the first night in the asylum, he points out the irony of the groundskeepers name, Mickey Finn (David Thewlis) and the reference to slipping someone a Mickey, a drug in their drink. The term "slip someone a Mickey" was most likely coined after a real man named Mickey Finn from Chicago, Illinois, who, in 1903 was arrested when it surfaced that he would drug and rob patrons of his inn.
(At around one hour and fifteen minutes) The music playing at the party is, appropriately, "Danse Macabre".
This is the second movie where Sir Ben Kingsley played a doctor in a mental hospital, the first being "Shutter Island" (2010).
"Edward Newgate: You're mad! Silas Lamb: We're all mad Dr. Newgate. Some are simply not mad enough to admit it."
"Edward Newgate: Well to... bring them back to their senses. Silas Lamb: And make a miserable man out of a perfectly happy horse?"
