TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

It's mentioned in passing that the spaceship used in the movie is a cycler. A Mars Cycler is a real-life project to reach Mars using mainly gravity assist flybys, originally proposed by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Once the booster has docked with the cycler there's no way to turn around and go back to Earth since the cycler has very little propellant on board, mostly for minor course corrections. This explains why the captain cannot abort the mission once they discover the stowaway.

The artificial gravity depicted in the movie can be obtained with present day technology; the first proof of concept, producing only 0.00015 g, was done in 1966 during the Gemini 11 flight. The proposed satellite Tempo3 is meant to further test centripetal artificial gravity generation. The project Mars Direct plans to spin the spaceship using a discarded upper stage as a counterweight, exactly as shown in the movie.

The screenplay for Stowaway was written before Joe Penna's feature debut, Arctic (2018). The film was originally intended to be set on Mars and connected to Stowaway, but the setting of the narrative was changed to the arctic after they saw a trailer for The Martian (2015).

The set of the spaceship can be experienced as part of the film tour in Bavaria Filmstadt south of Munich.

This movie appears to be based on a short story titled "The Cold Equations", written In 1954 by Tom Godwin, about a stowaway on an emergency medical flight. Although based on similar stories published earlier, this story is the one that became the standard. The story appears several times on TV, including as an episode in the rebooted The Twilight Zone (1985), followed by two movies and a short film: The Cold Equations (1996), The Cold Equations (2011) and The Stowaway (2014). Critics and engineers were very outspoken against the very poor engineering practices that would allow a ship to leave base with insufficient fuel margin to cover emergencies. In rebuttal, Don Sakers wrote the short story "The Cold Solution", which was received with acclaim by readers, but it hasn't received the wide spread exposure "The Cold Equations" has.

Popular Dialogues

"Zoe Levenson: You never know where life's gonna take you. Yes, I applied to the HARP program because I thought it would be a funny story to be rejected by Hyperion. But now I realize this is one of those rare opportunities that could truly give my life meaning beyond anything I could imagine."

"Zoe Levenson: What are we gonna do, ask him to walk out of the airlock?"
