As for how director James Gunn got Sylvester Stallone to voice the role of Nanaue/King Shark, it didn't take a whole lot of convincing. Gunn said to him, "I wrote this role for you in The Suicide Squad. It won't take too much of your time." Stallone replied, "Oh yeah?" To which Gunn said, "Yeah. It's a big, kinda chubby, human-eating shark." To which Stallone said, "Anything for you, brother."
James Gunn specifically filled The Suicide Squad with obscure and unknown villains since he felt that was more faithful to the Squad in the comics: "I wanted to stick with John Ostrander's original vision of mostly second-rate antagonists. There's an innate tragic element to supervillains who aren't even that good at being bad."
Joel Kinnaman said the film was an opportunity to give his character a blank slate, and said Flag was sillier, less jaded, more naive, and funnier compared to his portrayal in the first Suicide Squad (2016).
Harley Quinn kills one of her captors and then uses her bare feet to snatch the keys from his body before proceeding to unlock the handcuffs above her head with her feet. Margot Robbie did the stunt herself without using a stunt double. Director James Gunn praised Robbie for executing the trick herself, confirming that she facilitated her own escape in the scene rather than having a stunt double step in. The director shared his disappointment over the fact that Robbie's costume covers her face during one of the pivotal moments in the trick, so it isn't obvious that she's responsible for it. Gunn states, "[Robbie] is like a human Swiss army knife, and watching this scene with her flipping backward was just beyond incredible." He goes on to express, "I was so happy that it worked and I was mesmerized by it and then I got into the editing room with the footage and [she] has a cuff on [her] outfit that covers her face so it looks like it's a stunt person. It's my biggest regret."
Margot Robbie wears a new costume that features Harley's traditional red and black color palette, with James Gunn taking inspiration from the character's costume in the video game Batman: Arkham City. He wanted her jacket to have "motorcycle gang style"-writing on the back, and chose "Live fast, die clown" over other potential options "Clown AF" and "World's Best Grandpa". Gunn also removed Harley's "Rotten" facial tattoo from previous DC films because both he and Robbie disliked it.
"Young Cleo: Why rats, Papa? Ratcatcher: Rats are the lowliest and most despised of all creatures, my love. But if they have purpose, so do we all."
"Sol Soria: The clothes in the boxes is for all of you so you can blend in. That said, the walking tiburon is going to have to stay out of sight. King Shark: I wear disguise! Ratcatcher II: Awww, you are going to wear disguise? King Shark: Si! Peacemaker: Hey, he's learning Spanish! Ratcatcher II: What kind of disguise? King Shark: Fake moustache!"
