The film was originally planned with Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor. Due to delays the casting was changed. Raj Kapoor was then signed to play the role earlier planned for Prithviraj , with Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor playing his sons. Plans were to sign Babita and Neetu Singh was the female lead roles. The film once again went for further delays. When the film was finally revived, Shreeram Lagoo stepped into the fathers role, with Sanjeev Kumar and Shashi Kapoor signed in the roles of his children.
This movie is a remake of telugu movie gundamma katha.
