When Virgil's car breaks down, he is listening to a Red Sox spring training game. The play-by-play is being done by Chuck Thompson, Baseball Hall Of Fame broadcaster for the Baltimore Orioles.
Early in the movie, Virgil calls Bobbie collect at her office. On the wall of the cubicle is a framed poster for "Zoot Suit", the play by Luis Valdez which ran in Los Angeles and on Broadway before being made into a film. The character visible in the poster is "El Pachuco," who was played by Edward James Olmos, who plays Virgil here.
