Vishal Bhardwaj suggested the topic to the director Meghna Gulzar to make a movie as she was almost an expert on this case already due to her extensive knowledge.
In the movie, Irrfan Khan and Tabu go through a failing marriage and in one scene Irrfan Khan mentions the name of movie Ijaazat which has similar story as that of Irrfan and Tabu in this movie. The movie Ijaazat(1987) was directed by Gulzar, father of Meghna Gulzar which is clearly a tribute to him.
In October 2017, Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, parents of Aarushi Talwar on which the film is based, got acquitted by the Allahabad High Court.
Based on the "2008 Noida Double Murder Case", in which a teenage girl and her family servant were found murdered, and her parents were convicted for the murders.
Aarushi's aunt Vandana Talwar, who launched a campaign to prove the parents' innocence, provided some material to the film's writer Vishal Bhardwaj. Bhardwaj is also said to have received first-hand accounts from Rajesh and Nupur Talwar.
