Steve Seagal initially expressed interest on the condition he would fight the time travel wormhole with Akido. Director Jason Bourque explains " You can not physically fight a wormhole! It's just not possible. You are playing the doctor who creates the technology. I tried to explain the physics but he still insisted. We had to let me go."
According to Steven Seagal's agent, he was initially excited to accept a key role in this film but had to politely decline after the director prohibited him from fighting the wormhole. "I thought it was small-minded," he reportedly said. "I have fought all manner of evil. How could an interdimensional, immaterial transuniversal construct stand up to my fists of justice?"
The time travel device was originally called "La Bomba" to signify its destructive capabilities. Lou Diamond Phillips insisted the device was renamed "La Bamba" and the name can be seen on some takes.
