The film was originally made as a pilot for TV but garnered a theatrical release in a number of territories.
This pilot includes some of the few scenes of Spidey actually swinging on his web line, a costly and dangerous effect.
Unlike wall-climbing scenes on Batman (1966)(the only previous show to use this) many shots of Spider-Man climbing buildings were done live in downtown New York, with invisible wires.
Peter's schoolmate is wearing a Captain America shirt in the lab scene where Peter get's bitten by the radioactive spider.
Like most feature length pilots, a number of changes occurred before the regular show was commissioned. The characters of J. Jonah Jameson and Aunt May would be played by different actors in the future, Robbie Robertson was written out altogether, there would be few scenes of Spidey swinging across any skyscrapers and the music would be different.
"J. Jonah Jameson: [watching a special news alert on TV] This is a newspaper story, what are they doing with it?"
"J. Jonah Jameson: [about Spider-Man] What'd he look like? Peter Parker: Oh, eh, like... like a spider. J. Jonah Jameson: How many legs did he have? Peter Parker: Well, two of course, he's a man. J. Jonah Jameson: You just said he was a spider. Spider's have got lots of legs."
