The story of the Baladro sisters, inspired by the real-life Mexican serial killers known as Las Poquianchis.
The series is an adaptation of Mexican author Jorge Ibargüengoitia's 1977 novel Las Muertas, which was itself a fictionalized account of the real-life González Valenzuela sisters, known as "Las Poquianchis". This case, involving a network of brothels, murders, and systemic corruption in 1950s-1960s Mexico, served as the primary inspiration.
Las Muertas marks the first limited series directed by acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Luis Estrada, who is known for his satirical films critiquing political and social corruption, such as El Infierno.
The Spanish episode title "Las Dos Venganzas" translates to "The Two Revenges" in English. This title foreshadows the central, plot-driving revenge narrative initiated by Serafina Baladro within the episode.
For dramatic focus, the series centers on two main sisters, Arcángela and Serafina Baladro, whereas the real criminal group involved four González Valenzuela sisters. Furthermore, the catalyst for their downfall in the series is a personal revenge plot by Serafina, which differs from the historical record where an escaped victim alerted authorities.
The production filmed for approximately six months across multiple Mexican states, including Guanajuato, Veracruz, Mexico City, and San Luis Potosí, to authentically recreate the period setting of the 1960s.
