The Zoe implant records all visual experiences in a person's life. In Greek, Zoe means "life".
Pink Floyd's 1983 album, The Final Cut, shares a character with this film, Fletcher (named after Roger Waters' father). It isn't clear if this connection is deliberate, but the album also features overtones of tragic loss and memories.
Alan Hakman is a similar role to Robin Williams's earlier role in One Hour Photo (2002), in which he starred as mentally disturbed photo developer Sy Parrish.
Robin Williams also played a lead character named Alan, and shared the role with a child actor who plays Alan's younger self, in Jumanji (1995).
In this movie, Robin Williams is bound by the Three Codes from "The Cutter's Code." Five years before, the character he portrayed was bound by the Three Laws of Robotics in Bicentennial Man (1999).
"Alan: [in the library] Is Suicide under Self-Help?"
"Title Card: The Cutter's Code: i. A cutter cannot sell or give away Zoe footage. ii. A cutter cannot have a Zoe implant. iii. A cutter cannot mix Zoe footage from different lives for a Rememory."
