Following the final scene, a list of US cities threatened by earthquakes is shown. "According to the US Geological Survey, at least 39 states other than California are expected to experience major earthquakes in the future" Some of the cities that will be hardest hit include: Anchorage 9.2 Boston 6.5 Charleston 8.0 Memphis 8.0 New York City 6.5 Portland 9.0 Reno 7.0 St Louis 8.0 Salt Lake City 7.0 Seattle 9.0 "No city is currently as prepared as the city of Los Angeles."
The montage showing emergency services getting ready includes Squad 51 and Engine 51 from Emergency! (1972) backing in the station.
Clare Winslow's house is the same one used for I Dream of Jeannie (1965).
Footage of the San Bernadino train wreck that occurred in May 12th,1989 involving The Southern Pacific railroad was used in the montage showing the aftermath destruction of the earthquake.
When this movie originally aired NBC had public service announcements showing what people could do to protect and prepare themselves for an earthquake. The movie itself addresses this issue in a scene in which Clare and her daughter Heather go over the earthquake kit that Clare has put together. The kit includes having a first aid kit, water purification tablets, a battery powered transistor radio, fire extinguisher, several flashlights, matches, 500 dollars cash (due to the fact that with computers down banks might be closed for awhile), and a gun to protect themselves from looters. Clare also takes her daughter outside and has her daughter show her how to properly shut the house's main gas valve off. This is suggested to do to prevent gas main explosion. Clare also keeps in her car a backpack with much of the same equipment The kits and shutting off the gas valve are things that prove very valuable to both Clare and Heather after the quake.
"Dr. Clare Winslow: [check listing earthquake kit] $500 cash. Heather Winslow: Why so much money? Dr. Clare Winslow: Computers will be down, the banks could be closed for days."
"Heather Winslow: You knew it would be this bad. Dr. Clare Winslow: I had a good idea. Heather Winslow: Nobody listened. Dr. Clare Winslow: Oh they listened. They just didn't want to hear."
