Walter Hill and David Giler wrote a script for a remake of The Killer (1989) as far back as 1992. It was planned to have starred Richard Gere and Denzel Washington.
Nicolas Cage wanted to star in the remake if John Woo directed it.
Lupita Nyong'o was originally cast as Zee. After the COVID-19 pandemic delayed production, she moved on to other projects and became unavailable, so Nathalie Emmanuelle was cast in her place.
The crossword puzzle that appears throughout the movie is an actual solvable puzzle. Although many puzzles of this type (American style clues and 15 squares by 15 squares) have a theme, this one does not. There is a an error in the puzzle. One of the down clues (what should be 35-Down) has no number in the square. Also, the puzzle editor is listed as "Gilles Cornu". A quick search shows Mr. Cornu to be a French Postwar & Contemporary artist who was born in 1947. This could be some sort of inside joke among the makers of the movie (unless Mr. Cornu is also a crossword puzzle editor, besides being an artist).
Despite the fact that this was filmed with spherical lenses, "Filmed in Panavision" is listed in the end credits.
