TRIVIA

Trivia

Hal Holbrook (Ak) played Dixie Carter's (Necile) heart's desire in the sitcom Designing Women (1986).

L. Frank Baum's fairylands were meant to give America a mythology. Though based on European archetypes, their characters are very American in their thoughts and mannerisms. By contrast, this version has more British accents (mostly Scottish) than American, and the soundtrack is based on Celtic folk music.

This adaptation of L. Frank Baum's book leaves out Queen Zurline of the Wood Nymphs, and the unnamed Gnome King (a benevolent figure not to be confused with the evil Nome King of Baum's Wizard of Oz adventures). Some of their functions are given to Ak the Woodsman.

L. Frank Baum introduced the Forest of Burzee in his short piece "The Runaway Shadows or A Trick of Jack Frost" (1901). It reappeared in The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus (1902), "A Kidnapped Santa Claus" (1904, essentially a retelling of the Awgwa crisis with slightly different villains), "Nelebel's Fairyland" (1905), and Queen Zixi of Ix (1905). He later determined Burzee to be set in a shared universe with his Wizard of Oz tales, and embassies are often sent between the two fairylands (with Santa Claus himself as ambassador to Oz at one point). It first appeared in films in The Magic Cloak (1914).

The Awgwas' allies are named in the book as Asiatic Dragons, Giants of Tartary, Black Demons of Patalonia, and Goozle-Goblins.
