Originally set up in 2002 with Tony Scott directing, Robert De Niro playing Amand Degas, and Quentin Tarantino playing Richie Nix.
All the scenes involving corrupt cop Ferris Britton (Johnny Knoxville) were cut from the final movie because test screening audiences found the movie too confusing with these scenes.
Bruce Willis was originally set to star as Wayne Colson after he acquired the rights for the film in 1989.
The release date changed several times because the film has undergone a series of re-shoots after its original completion date in January 2006.
The script had uncredited rewrites by late producer/directors Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella. The film was also dedicated to their memory in the end credits.
"Richie Nix: I read about this guy once who weighed 1200 pounds. Can you believe that? For breakfast he'd have like 2 pounds of bacon, a dozen eggs, some rolls. Then for lunch he'd have 4 hamburgers, 4 double cheeseburgers, 8 boxes of fries. For dinner: 3 ham steaks, 6 sweet potatoes, 6 or 7 regular potatoes, some stuffing."
"[Nix has just tracked Wayne down to a convenience store] Richie Nix: [taking a gun and a sack out] All right! [places sack on register and says to cashier] Richie Nix: It's your big day, honey, it's a double feature. Get your cash laid out on the counter, and get some gum."
