When Kurt Russell was offered the lead he wanted to accept it, but the filming schedule overlapped with the shooting of the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Because the producers and Michelle Pfeiffer really wanted him for the role and the show already had a two-season order, a deal was made to film season 1 without Russell and then film season 2 and his scenes for season 1 together months later, when he was free.
