Rotten TomatoesThe Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House is Japanese showrunner Hirokazu Kore-eda's first Netflix production. The show has been inspired by manga series that revolves around nine friends that live together with a common goal of becoming geikos and maikos. The series is wholesome, to say the least. While it never really indulges into any sort of depth, which it is never meant to, all nine episodes manage to depict the real struggles behind such a concept in Japan, beautifully. The plot is full of flavour, especially as it gives you a great look into Japanese culture involving small towns and big cities. The only criticism out there is that there are no villainous plots and it is all smooth sailing. While some may not love this linear storytelling, if you are looking for something feel-good and enjoyable, The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House is a good option.
Based on manga series "Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san" by Aiko Koyama (first published December 28, 2016 in Weekly Shonen Sunday).
