This picture is notable for a motorcycle stunt where a motorbike rider, at the end of a long chase, rides his bike off a 200 foot cliff. Husqvarna motorcycles were specially adapted to film the chase hitting speeds of nearly 110 miles per hour while filming on location at Indian Dunes, Newhall, California.
Cliff Robertson was originally cast as Arthur Bishop, with Jeff Bridges as Steve McKenna.
The closing scenes of this movie were shot in Italy, specifically Naples, Campania, Italy.
The rundown hotel in downtown Los Angeles where the first victim resides has a dive bar on the corner. Its name? The Hard Rock Cafe - first discovered by the Doors, who actually used it as for photos of the band for the back cover and gatefold of the Morrison Hotel album in 1970. Side One is actually entitled "Hard Rock Cafe," to boot. Soon after, Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton asked the Doors for permission to 'borrow' the name for their soon-to-open restaurant in London.
There is no dialogue for the first 16 minutes.
"Steve McKenna: You do this for money? Arthur Bishop: Money is paid, but that's not the motive. It has to do with standing outside of it all, on your own."
"[last lines] Arthur Bishop: [voiceover as Steve reads note] Steve, if you read this, it means I didn't make it back. It also means you've broken a filament controlling a 13-second delay trigger. End of game. Bang! You're dead."
