Show
The series centers on Ryan Atwood, a troubled youth from a broken home who is adopted by the wealthy and philanthropic Sandy and Kirsten Cohen. Ryan and his surrogate brother Seth, a socially awkward yet quick-witted teenager, deal with life as outsiders in the high-class world of Newport Beach. Ryan and Seth spend much time navigating their relationships with girl-next-door Marissa Cooper, Seth's childhood crush Summer Roberts, and the fast-talking loner Taylor Townsend. Story lines deal with the culture clash between the idealistic Cohen family and the shallow, materialistic, and closed-minded community in which they reside. The series includes elements of postmodernism, and functions as a mixture of melodrama and comedy.

Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson dated for almost the entire run of the show (2003-2006). Additionally, several inside jokes are written into the show about this.
In one scene the characters talk about Seth (played by Adam Brody) vomiting "like that girl from 'The Sixth Sense'". A joke, since Mischa Barton played that very girl in the film The Sixth Sense (1999).
When Adam Brody tested for the role of Seth Cohen, he decided to improvise everything. That didn't sit well with writer Josh Schwartz, who told the producers afterward that he never wanted "to see that kid ever again". A month later, when they still had not found the right Seth, the producers called Brody back for another test. Despite Schwartz not liking the fact that Brody would not stick to the writing, he had to admit that there was something about him. Schwartz later confessed that Brody reminds him of himself in many ways - which in the end was perfect for the role of Seth, since it is based on the writer himself.
The infamous "Welcome to the O.C., bitch!" was not a line in the original script.
When they were casting for the role of Marissa Cooper, writer Josh Schwartz had written to the producers that Marissa was "the most beautiful girl you had ever seen". They later said that they chose Mischa Barton because of her awkward beauty (meant in a good way), and as Barton herself later stated: "I was up against girls who looked liked your usual Californian beach blondes. Guess they decided to go against that."
"Marissa: Hey, how come you're the brains? I'm the one who talked us back into that club. Seth: I'm sorry. I'm the brains. Ryan: You can be the beauty. Marissa: Okay, thanks. Summer: Great, and what am I, Cohen? Seth: Uh, the boobs? [Summer hits him] Seth: Uh, the bitch? Summer: Okay, I'll take the boobs. Seth: Hey. So will I. [Summer laughs] Seth: [later] Marissa: See, I think I should be the brains. Ryan: No, Seth's the brains. Marissa: Well, you're clearly not the beauty. Ryan: Ooooh, and now someone's the bitch. [smiles]"
"Seth: [rubs his boat, Summer Breeze, lovingly] Ohhh, I've missed you. It's been too long. Ryan: You're talking to a boat, Seth. Seth: Yeah, I talk to a plastic horse too but that never worries anyone. Ryan: It worries me."
