IMDbThe historical drama "The Tudors" engrosses viewers in the luxurious and perilous world of King Henry VIII's reign. This lavish series explores the life and times of one of England's most famous kings, focusing on his passionate love affairs, political machinations, and religious disagreements. As the intriguing and enigmatic Henry VIII, Jonathan Rhys Meyers gives a spellbinding portrayal that perfectly captures the king's charisma, volatility, and inner agony. The entire cast is outstanding, but Natalie Dormer and Jeremy Northam stand out as the cunning Sir Thomas More and the ambitious Anne Boleyn, respectively. With expensive clothing, sophisticated set designs, and gorgeous settings, the production qualities are excellent and transport viewers to the Tudor age. The production effectively combines dramatic flair with historical accuracy, evoking the spirit of the time while bringing in contemporary sensibilities. Although some historical purists might object to some of the compromises employed in the presentation of the story, "The Tudors" is nevertheless a fascinating and compelling series.

The character of Princess Margaret is actually a composite of Henry's older sister, Margaret Tudor, and his younger sister, Mary Tudor. Margaret married the King of Scotland and Mary the King of France, Louis XII. When the French king died less than a year after their marriage, Mary did indeed marry Charles Brandon in secret.
Natalie Dormer, a natural blonde, dyed her hair brunette after learning she got the role of Anne Boleyn. She later found out that the Showtime executives had wanted her to keep the blonde and they sent her back to try to change the color again. After a botched hair dye job, she begged to keep her hair brunette to stay true to the real Anne Boleyn, and they ultimately accepted.
James Frain also played a prominent role as the Spanish ambassador in Elizabeth (1998), a movie that chronologically takes place after this series.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers refused to wear a fat suit or gain weight as the aging and portly Henry VIII for the final season.
Creator Michael Hirst wrote every episode of the series.
"King Henry VIII: You think you know a story, but you only know how it ends. To get to the heart of the story, you have to go back to the beginning."
"Sir Thomas More: If the lion knows its own strength, no man could control it..."
