If there are any doubts about this movie being an homage to the great American cartoons, the characters names here "Avery Simpson" and "Parody Jones" are clearly a salute to Tex Avery and Chuck Jones, two of the geniuses behind the Warner Brothers cartoon studio.
The sign in front of a saloon is the painting from the side of Snowman's truck in Smokey and the Bandit (1977), also directed by Hal Needham.
Arnold Schwarzenegger (Handsome Stranger) wore an outfit identical to that of Clayton Moore's The Lone Ranger, just without a mask.
Many of the stunts and pratfalls were notably performed by Kirk Douglas himself. Seeing as he was 61 years old at the time of production, this was quite an impressive feat.
The scene that shows the burning "cathouse" features a caricature of Burt Reynolds painted on the side. This was, apparently, a nod from director Hal Needham to his pal Reynolds.
"Cactus Jack: [Jack sticks his gun in the Bank Clerks face] One. Close the door. Two. Open the safe. Three. On the floor. Cactus Jack: [the Bank Clerk closes the door, and then gets on the floor. Jack leans down and taps the Bank Clerk on the shoulder with the gun] You forgot Number two. Bank Clerk: Oh no I didn't! I did that when you stuck that gun in my face!"
"Cactus Jack: Take another step and I'll ventilate you!... Nobody outsmarts Cactus Jack Slade! [Handsome Stranger and Cactus Jack are about to shoot it out] Charming Jones: Hold it! Like the man says... just hold it. [She walks up to Cactus Jack] Charming Jones: [to Handsome Stranger] Ah, exactly *what* are your intentions? Handsome Stranger: To see that justice is done! Charming Jones: [to Cactus Jack] And yours? Cactus Jack: Blow his head off! Steal the money! Charming Jones: And...? Cactus Jack: [laughs] ... And then I'm gonna ravish you!
