By taking on a role in this film, Jonah Hill had to drop out of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained (2012), a part he had regarded as the perfect stepping stone for him to legitimatize his credentials as a dramatic actor. Various delays in production on Tarantino's project meant that Hill was still able to appear in the movie.
Vince Vaughn joined the project because he liked his character's relationship with his daughter.
Last theatrical film role of R. Lee Ermey.
Jonah Hill trained for two weeks in learning how to use a butterfly knife.
Jared Stern wrote the screen story in 2008 with a teen audience in mind. The writing duo of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were later brought in to convert the story to an R-rated script.
"Evan: [Looking at green gunge] Wait a second. I've seen this stuff before. Franklin: Had you just won a Nickelodeon Kid's choice award?"
"Jamarcus: I have this one scenario in my mind. I kinda hope it plays out like this: young, sexy, Asian housewife, alone at night, frightened. A noise out by the trash cans. Best call the neighbourhood watch. I show up, look heroic, and then... get this - she sucks my balls. Franklin: I'm also interested in that happening to me."
