Rotten TomatoesBrendan Fraser is back on screen with a very powerful and impactful performance in the film titled The Whale. The film is based on the hardships faced by an obese man, a theme that is not often highlighted in the film industry. Most of the scenes take place in the man's apartment and there are selective characters hence the movie is carried by the performances of the actors portraying these characters. The actors have done such a wonderful job with their raw performances. Besides highlighting a very relevant issue of how unhealthy life choices can bring a person down and cause depression it also beautifully addresses family issues, abandonment, and more. The storyline of the film is so intense and full of emotions that the audience is engaged and gripped till the very end. The plot development also takes place beautifully and the film not only tests all our emotions but also sends out beautiful messages.

Following its debut screening at the Venice Film Festival, both the movie and lead actor, Brendan Fraser, were given a six-minute standing ovation; a moment, caught on camera, that brought Fraser to tears. Long time fans and critics alike have called The Whale (2022) a revival of Fraser's career after many years of absence from the screen.
Because of his character's severe weight, Brendan Fraser had to don a heavy prosthetic suit for the role that he wore for hours. He told members of the media in attendance at the Venice International Film Festival (via Variety), "I developed muscles I did not know I had. I even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed; it was like stepping off the dock onto a boat in Venice. That [sense of] undulating. It gave me appreciation for those whose bodies are similar. You need to be an incredibly strong person, mentally and physically, to inhabit that physical being."
At the 2022 Venice Film Festival, Darren Aronofsky said that it took him ten years to cast this film. Casting the main role of Charlie was a huge challenge until he saw a trailer for the Brazilian film Journey to the End of the Night (2006) starring Brendan Fraser, where it "clicked" for the director who would later cast Fraser as lead.
Young Ellie in the flashback scenes is played by Sadie Sink's little sister, Jacey.
Throughout the film, Charlie (Brendan Fraser) orders food from "Gambino's", which is actually an Italian restaurant in Moscow, Idaho, where the film is set. Screenwriter Samuel D. Hunter grew up in Moscow.
"Charlie: Do you ever get the feeling that people are incapable of not caring?"
"Charlie: I need to know that I have done one right thing with my life!"
