The film is stylistically modeled after the films of the 1930s and '40s. Says director Thomas, "The acting style is subtle. All the characters are introverts, not extroverts. The musical score is a bit too big and romantic. The atmosphere is very thick and the 'horror' comes from it's themes and the state of minds of the characters rather than grotesque situations."
In the original short story, John, Charlotte's husband, is a rather passive doctor, who actually faints when he experiences his wife's wild transformation. In keeping with this idea, John in the movie, is easily maneuvered by the women that surround him.
Writer/actor Aric Cushing spent one year compiling lost stories of Gilman's entitled 'The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories.'
This motion picture does not include a single CGI shot. In keeping with the classical film tradition, all effects were done 'in camera.'
The first draft the script actually resembled a blow by blow of the story. However, after researching many of Gilman's other works and finding numerous direct film adaptations in short form as well as a BBC television movie, the writers began to construct an origins myth.
