This is the first "Peanuts" special to not have Schroeder in it.
This marks the debut of the character of Marcie in the animated specials. She appeared in the comics for the first time in 1968.
The first part of the special is mainly composed of "blackout gags" taken mainly verbatim from the comic strips. One exception is Linus and Lucy discussing the word problem with Lucy responding like a prerecorded phone message. The original characters in that strip were Franklin and Peppermint Patty, respectively. This format of using "blackout gags" would later be reused in A Charlie Brown Celebration (1982), It's an Adventure, Charlie Brown (1983), It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown (1992), and, most notably, on The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show (1983).
"Charlie Brown: [Charlie Brown and Sally walk to school] You're really something, do you know that? I've never seen anyone who was so uptight about school. Why don't you just relax? Sally: [next scene; Sally stands on her chair in the classroom and has a nervous look on her face] Who can relax?"
"Patricia 'Peppermint Patty' Reichardt: A science project? Oh, good grief, I hate science projects! I can never think of anything different! Franklin: I'm going to do mine on the various kinds of metals in the earth and how each has affected the progress of mankind. Patricia 'Peppermint Patty' Reichardt: Maybe I'll do one on stomachaches."
