The second season was initially planned to follow the events of the original Season 1 finale, which would have seen Dick Grayson assume the identity of Nightwing and establish H.I.V.E. as the Titans' next adversaries. After the original Season 1 finale was pulled, elements of the episode were given to the Season 2 premiere Titans: Trigon (2019) which resolved that Trigon story as intended. However, H.I.V.E. was replaced by Deathstroke, while Dick Grayson's arc into Nightwing was re-envisioned to conclude in the Season 2 finale.
This series is the first live-action incarnation of DC Comics' Teen Titans, though several members of the team (Robin, Wonder Girl, Speedy, Kid Flash) have shown up on other live-action television shows.
The first teaser promo included footage of unidentified actors playing Beast Boy and Speedy. Speedy being the 2nd Speedy, Mia Dearden, wearing the same costume that Willa Holland wore as Thea Dearden Queen/Speedy in Arrow (2012).
The Doom Patrol, the team that raised Garfield "Gar" Logan/Beast Boy make an appearance on this series, which was their first ever live action portrayal. Their appearance on this show was actually a backdoor pilot for a Doom Patrol (2019) spin off series that uses many of the same actors and also is an original show for the DC Universe streaming service.
The show is primarily based on the highly successful and popular "The New Teen Titans" comic book by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez.
