This was Olivia de Havilland's first film role in three years. She was suspended by Warner Brothers when she filed suit against the studio on August 23, 1943, and was officially fired by the studio after she won her suit by unanimous decision on December 8, 1944. Because of this lawsuit and her reputation as a perfectionist, de Haviland was labeled "difficult" in show business, temporarily making her an undesirable choice for many producers.
Ginger Rogers wrote that Leland Hayward first offered her the role of Josephine Norris. Rogers read the script and asked herself if she wanted to play the mother of a twenty-year-old man who is preparing to go off to war. She turned down the role and later regretted it when Olivia de Havilland won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Rogers also turned down The Snake Pit (1948), which Olivia also accepted and for which she received an Oscar nomination. Rogers wrote: "It seemed Olivia knew a good thing when she saw it. Perhaps Olivia should thank me for such poor judgment".
When the aircraft flies over the small town, a spectator declares it to be a DH, or a De Havilland. Sir Geoffrey De Havilland, the aircraft engineer was cousin to Olivia .
The only Oscar nominated performance by Olivia de Havilland in a non-Best Picture nominated film. She won her first Best Actress Oscar for her role in this film.
The popular 1946 Livingston-Evans song hit "To Each His Own", though inspired by the film's title, was not included in the soundtrack. The top-selling version by Eddy Howard entered the national record charts three months after the movie's premiere and was followed by other best-sellers from The Ink Spots, Freddy Martin, Tony Martin, and The Modernaires.
