Peter Cullen reprised his role as the Autobot Commander Optimus Prime, making this the third cartoon series in which he voiced the character.
This show featured no Decepticons or any other form of villainous Transformers characters. Aimed at a younger audience, the Autobot heroes of this show instead dealt with the local hazards of their town in order to teach valuable lessons about safety to the children watching it.
Blades is an Autobot who turns into an aircraft, yet is also afraid of heights. This might be a call-back to a similar character named Silverbolt from The Transformers (1984).
Although this show took place in the same universe as its better counterpart , Transformers Prime (2010), it only made mostly implicit references to it. For instance, the evil organization, in which Dr. Morocco (Tim Curry) is in cahoots, was most likely M.E.C.H., the Decepticons are initially only referred to as "those who would do harm" (the word Decepticon is used in the first season finale, however), and Optimus Prime called Ratchet their medic, instead of referring to him by name.
The main character was named after west coast music artist Cody Burns . A creator at Hasbro stated his daughter was a big fan and threw the name in for consideration while making character designs.
"Blades: I've seen pictures of aliens. They hug your face and lay eggs in your tummy! Boulder: No! They're round blobs that swallow everything in their path. Including... vehicles! Chase: That is incorrect. Aliens are cloaked hunters. But they can't see you if you're covered in mud. Blades: Lets look for some mud! [Blades starts frantically searching for mud on the ground] Heatwave: Just to remind you, WE're aliens."
"Cody Burns: Movie time! Chase: I vote for an action film. Preferably with high-speed pursuits. Blades: Comedy, please! I am so in the mood to laugh! Boulder: Ooh! How about a romance? Heatwave: Nah, forget that! Put on a war movie. Cody Burns: We're gonna try something new. A historical drama. [Autobots all moan] Heatwave: Come on, Cody, war is partly history. Cody Burns: You'll like it. It's about explorers living with natives in an uncharted land. [Autobots yammer even louder] Heatwave: Cody, this hurts inside! Cody Burns: The natives have spears and blowguns! Heatwave: Now you're talkin'!"
