Most of the movie was shot inside of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In one of the scenes, when the children exit the ferry, the shot shows the CN Tower and other major buildings in Toronto. The school scenes were filmed at Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute, which is located in Toronto.
Mare Winningham or "Ginny" 's husband in the movie is a neuro surgeon and Mare guest starred on the ABC hit "Grey's Anatomy" as the main characters step mom and her step daughter was married to a neuro surgeon.
