TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

The various filmmakers were asked to adhere to three guidelines: They had only twenty-four hours to shoot, a week to edit, and needed to give the sense of a particular neighborhood.

This movie was first shown at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2008, and was two segments longer. One of the segments was black-and-white, directed by Scarlett Johansson (another directorial debut), and starred Kevin Bacon. The other was made by Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev, and featured Carla Gugino, Goran Visnjic, and Nicholas Purcell. This movie was re-edited later to cut the two segments.

Two short films, Apocrypha (2009) directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev, and These Vagabond Shoes (2009) directed by Scarlett Johansson were shot for inclusion in this movie, but were left out of the finished cut. Both shorts are available as bonus extras in the DVD.

Rachel Bilson met her fiancé Hayden Christensen on the set of this movie.

The segment "Upper East Side" was to have been directed by Anthony Minghella, who died shortly before its filming. Minghella asked Shekhar Kapur to replace him in their last conversation. After Minghella's death, Kapur wrote in his blog, "I will direct the film now, with Anthony in my heart and in presence of his soul." This movie is dedicated to Minghella at the beginning of the closing credits.

Popular Dialogues

"Camille: Hey, David, it's Camille. You know, when Dostoevsky was writing The Gambler, he signed a contract with his publisher saying that he would finish it in twenty-six days, and he did it, but he had the help of this young stenographer. This girl, she... she stayed with him and she helped him. And... afterwards they actually got married. Ha, isn't that cool? That's how he met his wife. Anyway I found this story in the preface for Crime and Punishment so I was thinking that... and, this would have to be between you and me, but... I was thinking that I could read the books and tell you what's going on and that way you could just focus on your music. But only if you're comfortable with this, and if you're not then you can just forget it, and you can quit, but if you are... then open this door. David: Open... this door? [crawls to his front door and opens it] Camille: Okay, a deal's a deal. David: Does this mean we're getting married? Camille: I have a lot of reading to do... Camille: Hi, I'm Camille. David: Hi, I'm David."

"Writer: [after lighting her cigarette] We share a flame, thousands of tiny molecules are heating up right now, they're penetrating our brain. Alright, they're stimulating our sexual desire. I mean, I don't know about you, but I find that shit very romantic. And you know, I'm so glad you walked over here because now I can feel a little bit more comfortable to tell you that I happen to be on the forefront of men able to find and locate a woman's G-spot, and I could - I could do that for you. Call Girl: [Sarcastically] That's really generous of you, thank you. Writer: Well, it's my pleasure. Well. It's your pleasure. Call Girl: And what makes you think I haven't located it yet? Writer: Uh, the way you hold the cigarette. It's a little high and tight. Y'know what you have to do, is you have to lower it. You have to bring it all the way down, in there, so it just sits. Comfortably. Y'know if it's high and tight like that, the whole body gets restricted and the... plexus? Gets closed off. Y'know and the vagina gets locked."
