Despite all the safety precautions, Guy Pearce was bitten on the shoulder by one of the more temperamental tigers. He later admitted that "it hurt but I thought it was pretty cool to get bitten by a tiger".
Animatronic tigers were used in any scene that might involve any real risk to the actors. Five full-size adult tigers were built for the film.
All the tiger noises are genuine. Tigers are naturally quite vocal and make an array of different sounds.
In most of the scenes where one of the tiger cubs is looking towards the camera, the animal is looking at his trainer who is holding his milk bottle.
Guy Pearce insisted on being filmed with an adult tiger. Usually, these scenes are filmed separately.
"Aidan McRory: Where did you learn your English? Naï-Rea: His Excellency asked the Australian priests to open a school here to teach us languages. Aidan McRory: Well, I'm very impressed. What else did they teach you? Naï-Rea: To beware of white men."
"Aidan McRory: Forgive me. Forgive me."
