For the shot of the Spatula City billboard, the production bought a billboard on a remote stretch of highway. For months afterward, drivers taking the exit would ask nearby businesses about Spatula City. The ad was finally removed after the businesses complained.
According to 'Weird Al' Yankovic, Kevin McCarthy would often break out in laughter after finishing a take in which his character was especially nasty.
During Behind the Music: 'Weird Al' Yankovic (1999), Emo Philips shows an actual Screen Actors Guild residual check he earned for this film, 30 cents. He stated proudly that the check represented what being in this film did for his career.
'Weird Al' Yankovic wanted to call the movie "The Vidiot." He didn't think "UHF" would make much sense in a world slowly gravitating toward cable television, and the UHF designation is not widely known outside North America. For the U.S. market, Orion insisted on UHF. In most foreign markets, it was called "The Vidiot from UHF". In the DVD commentary, Weird Al says that in interviews on foreign television shows, when asked why he picked that title, he felt like replying, "I DIDN'T! The studio did! I hate that title!" In Mexico it was released as "Los Telelocos", which translates as "The TV Crazies".
Easter Egg: the 2002 region 1 DVD is two-sided (side one is standard, side two is widescreen). To save space, the special features are separated between the two sides. However, most of the features are listed (and can be selected) in the Special Features menu on both sides. If you highlight a feature that isn't on the side you're playing, the message "On Other Side" displays. If you select it anyway, 'Weird Al' Yankovic walks on-screen and explains that the feature is on the other side of the disc. If you select it again without flipping the disc, Weird Al walks back on-screen and tells you again that the feature is on the other side, getting progressively angrier.

What's it gonna be? [Phyllis Weaver has difficulty in choosing as the audience point to the box] Phyllis Weaver: I'll take the box. The box! [the audience applauses] Kuni: You took the box? Let's see what's in the box! [Hiro-san opens the box; the audience gasps. There is a silence] Kuni: Nothing! Absolutely nothing! STUPID! You're so STU-PIIIIIIIIIIID!"
