Frank (Paul Bettany) and his history is partly based on Alan Ball's father.
Writer-Director-Producer Alan Ball wrote the family as living in South Carolina, while he was born and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. The early scene where Daddy Mac (portrayed by Stephen Root) and Mike (portrayed by Steve Zahn) are watching an Atlanta Falcons football game (and yelling at the kids to get out of the way) is a reference to where Ball grew up.
Spiro Agnew resigned on October 10, 1973. Uncle Frank says that " Agnew needs to go." His niece Beth just entered school so the party takes place sometime between September and October of 1973.
The song Cool Jerk by The Capitols is featured in this movie. It's also the song Kevin's Uncle Frank sings in the shower in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992).
Stephen Root was also in Alan Ball's TV series True Blood (2008).
"Frank: You gonna be the person you decide to be, or are you gonna be the person everyone else tells you you are?"
"Frank: See, once you get out of a town like Creekville, not only do you see how small your world was, you also see how much bigger it could become."
