Matt Lanter's grandfather was a survivor of the USS Indianapolis. In the film, Lanter wears his grandfather's dogtags.

Scenes set on the USS Indianapolis were filmed aboard the USS Alabama, docked in Mobile Bay, Mobile, Alabama. The same battleship was used to film Under Siege (1992).

While the film description says that 300 crewmen were stranded, the actual number was 1,196; 879 of whom died in the water from injuries related to the torpedo attack, from sharks, or from exposure. There were 317 survivors.

When the wreckage of the USS Indianapolis was discovered in August 2017, some 72 years after it sank, there were 19 crew members still living.

The wreckage of the USS Indianapolis was found on 19 August 2017 in the Philippines 3 1/2 miles below the surface by a Paul Allen crew. Paul Allen was a cofounder of Microsoft along with Bill Gates.
