  • Story:

VR Troopers is a syndicated live action superhero television series produced by Saban Entertainment from 1994 to 1996. The show tried to profit from the fascination with virtual reality in the early 1990s as well as the success of Power Rangers. The show featured early CGI and video effects mixed with Japanese stock footage from three different Metal Hero Series: Superhuman Machine Metalder, Dimensional Warrior Spielban, and Space Sheriff Shaider. This kind of adaptation technique—turning multiple shows into one show—was originally used in such anime programs as Robotech and Voltron, though this was one of the first times this technique was used for a tokusatsu adaptation. On May 7, 2010 the copyright for VR Troopers was transferred from BVS International to SCG Power Rangers. Saban's VR Troopers was the first official "sister series" to the most popular "action fighting kid show" at the time, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. Much like it, this was an Americanization of a Japanese tokusatsu children's program by Toei Company LTD. The series was deemed successful, but not as successful as the Power Rangers franchise. Unfortunately, for the series, the Japanese footage was quickly exhausted due to extreme cases where multiple tokusatsu scenes were put together in one episode to the extent where stock footage had to be reused multiple times throughout the series. Similarly, another Saban program, Big Bad Beetleborgs, would do well but ultimately end quickly due to a lack of stock footage. Both series were adapted from the Japanese Metal Heroes series. The show spawned a toy line and a video game for the Sega Genesis and Sega Game Gear.

TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

The temple which Ryan is often seen meditating or practicing karate in front of is a memorial in Angles Gate Park in San Pedro, on the southern edge of Los Angeles, which houses the Korean Peace Bell given by Korea to the city during the 1976 bicentennial.

Was adapted from three unrelated '80s Metal Hero Shows: Space Sheriff Shaider, Dimensional Warrior Spielban, and Super Machine Metalder.

The role of Ryan's wisecracking dog Jeb was played by Zeb, a Redbone Coonhound. Zeb's daughter sometimes filled in as Jeb's stunt double.

Doctor Hart was originally a computer-generated likeness of Albert Einstein, rather than a middle-aged black man, programmed by Ryan's dad. However, when the series came out the story was changed, and Professor Hart was the "soul" of Dr. Steele's partner, preserved in the computer's memory. Evidence from this early, primitive version of the show can be seen at the end of the 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' official fan club video. The footage that appears on some Power Rangers tapes seems to have come from an unaired pilot which included a CGI Hart who looked like Einstein. Also, Kaitlin Star's name was to be Kaitlin Hall.

The show went through two different name changes, Psycon and Cybertron. In the Psycon pilot script, the main character was Adam Steele, who merged with the cyborg Psycon instead of transforming into it. The enemy was Grimlord, whose alter ego was Cyrus Ritker, who led a robot army known as Cyberdrones. Cyrus had a son called Percy who was Adam's martial arts rival. Adam's mentor and caretaker was a martial arts sensei called Tao. Adam was friends with Tao's daughter Mia and a young kid called Mouse MacKenzie. The Cybertron pilot starred Jason David Frank as Adam and drew its source footage from Super Machine Metalder. Adam was depicted as a solo hero going up against an army of robots known as Wardrones, led by Grimlord/Cyrus Rikter. Percy, Tao Chong, and Mia were also included. Doug Sloan played Tyler Steele in flashbacks. A pair of bumbling news reporters named Elmo, played by Jamie Kennedy, and Scuzzy, would've provided comic relief. Its theme song was based on Ron Wasserman's "Go Green/White Ranger Go" song in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993). According to Frank on his reality web series "My Morphin Life", he was originally cast as Ryan Steele and Brad Hawkins was cast as Tommy the Green Ranger on Power Rangers. At the last minute producers decided to switch the actors' roles. Hawkins would later appear in Power Rangers Zeo (1996).

Popular Dialogues

"Grimlord: As for you, Despera ... and all of you! This is the last time I hire any of your relatives!!"

"[Ryan, Kaitlin, and J.B. are turned into young children] Young Kaitlin: What's happened to us? Young J.B.: [surprised] Ryan, is that you? Young Ryan: This is unbelievable!"
