Werewolf by Night introduces us to a completely new area of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by giving the old Universal horrors a smart, contemporary spin. It's so masterfully produced that you can almost picture it as a forgotten favourite. It is a beautiful homage to the early Universal monster pictures. For a modern audience, it's about as frightening as those original films, but it doesn't matter because it perfectly mimics the style of vintage horror that hasn't been around for a while. The film's Marvel twist is enough to keep it seeming somewhat fresh while appealing to fans' nostalgia for classic horror films, despite the style and clichés being dated. Gael Garcia Bernal does a fantastic job portraying Jack, and the relationship he has with Laura Donnelly calls for more time on screen. It won't necessarily make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, but the sluggish, creeping tone will keep you on the edge of your seat.
