"The Mother," starring Jennifer Lopez, comes dangerously close to being an impressive action-packed thriller with a female protagonist seeking vengeance. Lopez plays "The Mother," a deadly female assassin chased by two dangerous arms traffickers, Adrian Lovell (Joseph Fiennes) and Hector lvarez (Gael Garca Bernal). The fact that one of the men is the father of her unborn child is revealed in the film's opening sequence, resulting in a surprise plot twist. To put things right, the mother joins forces with the FBI. While the plot has promise, there are some unfinished details that must be addressed. The antagonists are unconvincing, which is more of a written issue than an acting issue. The Mother" opens on a high note and contains several really engaging passages, although it slows down at times. The film contains several fantastic action moments, such as an intense chase around Cuba and a one-on-one combat scene between Lopez and Fiennes that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
