Once Adam was cast as the lead, the producers asked him to look over the script and re-write it to suit his comedy style.
Writer John Whittington had always envisioned a Tom Hanks-esqe actor to portray Noah, and settled early on Adam DeVine. However, when Adam booked the lead role opposite Zac Efron in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016), he was worried that Adam would be too busy, or not interested in doing a smaller film. Amazingly, Adam remained passionate about the film, and fought hard to get it made. John, ultimately, gave Adam enormous credit in the development of this film, and stated that without him, the movie had a very small chance of being made.
Due to scheduling conflicts, Alexandra Daddario only filmed for 2 weeks, as she had to shoot We Have Always Lived in the Castle (2018)] afterwards. To accommodate this, there was a lot of night shoots that went for 16-plus hours to film all the Halloween party scenes.
Filmed entirely in New Orleans.
Although they stuck to the script, occasionally, the cast was able to improvise, which Adam frequented in the most.
"Max: Things happen for no reason at all, but they create opportunities."
"Noah Ashby: I'm talking about fate. Max: Fate is a tricky lady. When you try to figure her out, you just get more confused. Listen, all I know is the mistakes I've made, and the ladies I've laid have made me who I am today. If I were to go back and relive it differently, I wouldn't be me. And I like me."
