Whitney Houston's daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown expressed interest in portraying her mother in a biopic. When asked in an interview with "Entertainment Weekly" whether director Angela Bassett considered casting Brown she said: "No, I did not think about that. I did not think about casting her. And probably for a number of reasons, you know. One being that she's not an actress. I know she's acted here and there. I know she's been on their family's reality show, but she's not an actress and acting is a craft."
Whitney Houston's family was not supportive of the movie. Her mother Cissy Houston told "Entertainment Tonight" that no one involved in the making of the movie knew Whitney, while Whitney's daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown was angry at director Angela Bassett for not casting her in the role of her late mother.
Director Angela Bassett worked with the real Whitney Houston in Waiting to Exhale (1995).
While filming a scene on a private jet between Whitney and Robyn, Yolonda Ross accidentally knocked over a glass of water during the second take. The owner of the jet immediately shut down filming and kicked everyone off the plane. This is the take that is used in the film.
Filming took 20 days to complete.
"Bobby Brown: [to Whitney] I love you too much."
"Whitney Houston: Time to be Whitney Houston."
