Jake Kasdan wrote the part of Daryl Zero specifically for Bill Pullman after meeting the actor on the set of The Accidental Tourist (1988), directed by his father, Lawrence Kasdan.
They shot two days in Los Angeles, but 95% of the film was shot in Portland, Oregon where most of it is set.
The restaurant conversation between Arlo and Stark was filmed in Portland's Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. The grates separating the booths leave the pair looking like they're in a confessional booth which fits Stark's admission.
The blackmailer uses a computer running OpenStep (NeXT OS) to type the blackmail letter.
"My father shot the rodent-cam shot," he says, referring to Lawrence Kasdan filming the floor-level tracking shot through the restaurant. "Some people, it's their favorite shot in the movie. Some people hate it."
"Daryl Zero: Now, a few words on looking for things. When you go looking for something specific, your chances of finding it are very bad. Because of all the things in the world, you're only looking for one of them. When you go looking for anything at all, your chances of finding it are very good. Because of all the things in the world, you're sure to find some of them."
"Daryl Zero: A few words here about following people. People know they're being followed when they turn around and see someone following them. They can't tell they're being followed if you get there first."
