Huawei Band 10 review: a sleek, reliable fitness tracker with impressive battery life

Huawei has been catering to the budget fitness band segment for a while now, and its latest addition is the Huawei Band 10. The wearable succeeds the Band 9, which launched in India earlier this January. The new fitness band retains the familiar rectangular design, comes in multiple colour options, and packs a host of health and fitness features, including workouts and long battery life. But with a starting price of Rs 3,999, does the Huawei Band 10 still offer good value or are cheaper bands or affordable smartwatches a better deal? We explore that and more in our detailed review.

Design and display

The Huawei Band 10 features a rectangular 1.47-inch (194 × 368 pixels) AMOLED display with thick bezels and available in either an aluminium alloy (Rs 4,199) or polymer case. The band comes in several colour options, with matching straps and cases. We received the Pink colour variant with a polymer case for review, which I personally liked and should be an appealing option for those who love pastel tones. The fitness band also comes in Green, Blue, Purple, White, Matte Black, and Black (polymer) colours.

The fitness band is impressively lightweight, and the fluoroelastomer (rubber) strap feels very comfortable, even after long hours of wear. Although I occasionally adjusted the watch for a better fit, it didn’t feel uncomfortable enough for me to remove it. Despite not being a fan of wearing smartwatches while sleeping, I had no issues sleeping with the Huawei Band 10 on. Removing the strap is simple too, by just pressing the buttons on the back of the case.

The AMOLED display is bright, vibrant, and performs well even under direct sunlight. Features like raise-to-wake and support for swipe and touch gestures make navigation easy. While it takes a few tries, you get adjusted to the fitness band’s navigation in no time. The power button sits on the right side of the case, and it also brings up the full list of features for quick access.

Huawei also provides a variety of watch faces to suit different styles, fonts, and activity preferences. The band supports Always On Display (AOD), which can be enabled from the settings menu of the fitness band. AOD shows essential information such as date and time, battery level, weather updates, and step count.

Features

The Huawei Band 10 packs a wide range of health and fitness features. The list includes an optical heart rate sensor that continuously tracks your heart rate, with detailed insights available in the Huawei Health app. The band also measures SpO2 (blood oxygen) levels and stress. While these readings shouldn’t be used for medical diagnoses, they help spot potential irregularities and keep track of your well-being.

One of the standout features is Huawei’s proprietary TruSleep, which provides detailed sleep tracking from your REM cycles to how many times you wake up during the night. Each morning, you’ll receive an in-depth sleep report, which I found genuinely useful for understanding and improving sleep quality. While I didn’t manage to improve my sleep quality, it was still a helpful daily reminder that I should.

Your daily activity tracking is also covered. You get a step counter, reminders to move if you’ve been sitting too long, and Apple Watch-style activity rings to complete throughout the day. These are all motivating features for staying active and will get you moving a little at least.

When it comes to workouts, the Huawei Band 10 supports a variety of modes, including running, swimming, strength training, yoga, HIIT, boxing, and CrossFit. During each session, the fitness band tracks your heart rate, calories burned, stress levels, and workout duration. The companion app goes a step further by offering tailored running plans and personalised goals to help you stay on track with your fitness journey.

App connectivity

The Huawei Band 10 is compatible with Android (9.0 or later) and iOS (13.0 or later) devices. We primarily tested it with an Android phone. However, it’s worth noting that the companion app, Huawei Health, is not available on the Google Play Store. This means you’ll need to sideload it, which we did without facing any issues. That said, we do not recommend installing unofficial versions of apps and advise users to proceed with caution.

On iOS, the process is simpler as the Huawei Health app is available on the App Store, making it easy to download and pair the Band 10 with an iPhone. We tested this as well, and the band connected seamlessly. Switching between Android and iOS devices was also smooth, with no noticeable hiccups.

Usage and performance

Personally, I didn’t face any issues with the Huawei Band 10. It runs smoothly, with all features working as expected, and notifications showing up correctly. My usage was more regular than intensive since I didn’t put it through multiple workout modes daily. But even so, the fitness band handled all the essential tasks well. It effectively displays your health stats, lets you control your phone’s camera and music, and keeps you updated with notifications.

Speaking of which, the Band 10 displays incoming calls, messages, and app notifications from platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram. You can reject calls and respond to messages on an Android smartphone using quick replies or emojis, a handy feature if you don’t want to reach for your phone.

The Huawei Health app is also easy to navigate and packed with features. You can view detailed health and fitness reports, explore and apply different watch faces, track your achievements, and even log your menstrual cycle. The Huawei Band 10 is 5ATM water-resistant, so it’s safe to wear in the shower or while swimming.

Battery

Huawei claims the Band 10 can deliver up to 14 days of battery life under light usage, which includes sleep monitoring turned off, about 30 minutes of workouts per week, 60 notifications daily, and the screen lighting up around 200 times a day. For typical usage, the estimated battery life drops to around 8 days.

In my experience, the fitness band lasted about 9 days on a full charge. This included sleep tracking every night, step counting, frequent notifications, and occasional use of health features, although I didn’t log any workouts during this time. Still, the battery performance is impressive and should easily get you through over a week of moderate use. If you enable the Always-On Display (AOD), battery life is expected to reduce to about 3 days.

The Huawei Band 10 comes with a magnetic charging port, which connects via a Type-A adapter (not included). It takes just over an hour to fully charge the device. While the charger is easy to snap on and off, you’ll want to ensure it’s properly aligned to avoid any interruptions during charging, as it easily comes off.

Verdict

Overall, the Huawei Band 10 is a budget-friendly fitness tracker that’s well-suited for daily use and for those looking to log their workouts and health stats. It offers a bright and responsive display, impressive battery life, and a range of useful features. The design is simple yet elegant, and comfortable at the same time for everyday wear.

If you’re specifically looking for a fitness band to track your daily activities, health metrics, and workouts, the Huawei Band 10 is a solid option. However, the absence of the official Huawei Health app on the Google Play Store remains a notable downside.

In this price range, there aren’t many dedicated fitness bands to choose from. However, the alternatives are entry-level smartwatches that offer larger displays and more features at a similar or even lower price point. So, while a smartwatch might seem like a more feature-rich option, if you’re set on getting a fitness band, the Huawei Band 10 is definitely worth considering.
