There’s a lot that could change with the iPhone launch this year. First is Apple’s launch schedule changing with only the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and the iPhone Fold coming this year. The standard iPhone 18 is reportedly launching in spring 2027 alongside the iPhone 17e and iPhone Air 2. Now, coming to the upgrades, the iPhone 18 Pro series is said to finally debut the under-display Face ID technology along with a different placement for the selfie camera. We’ve heard rumours about this, and now we have a glimpse of how it could look, courtesy of Jon Prosser.
In a new video shared on Front Page Tech, Prosser gives us a first look at the iPhone 18 Pro’s design and new features. Do note that these are renders designed based on the leaks and rumours for the iPhone 18 Pro. The Face ID is now tucked under the screen just next to the front camera, which now sits on the top-left corner. This is a major shift from the centrally-placed front camera that we’ve been seeing on iPhones. The big question is if the Dynamic Island will continue to stay, given the new camera design.
Prosser says that the Dynamic Island will still be there on the iPhone 18 Pro, but in a slightly different location. It’s now smaller too but will continue to function the same way. Prosser notes that Dynamic Island is an integral part of the iPhone’s software that it will not be removed, and rightly so, as it’s one of the iPhone’s defining features.
Apple went bold last year with the iPhone 17 Pro Max‘s bright orange colour. It might play safer this year with three new colour options expected: Burgundy, Brown, and Purple.
The main camera on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could adopt a variable aperture system. This would allow the camera to adjust how much light enters the sensor, enabling stronger background blur when the aperture is wide, sharper scenes when it’s narrowed, and improved low-light performance by reducing noise. Aperture refers to the size of the lens opening that controls the amount of light reaching the camera sensor.
Prosser adds that the variable aperture may be exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Also, the Camera Control button is here to stay but will only detect pressure, thereby cutting manufacturing costs and making the iPhone easier to repair. More upgrades include the A20 Pro chip for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, making them the first to use a 2nm chip. This suggests a major performance leap for the upcoming iPhones.
Both phones are also said to feature the second-generation Apple C2 in-house modem chip. Connectivity is getting a further boost with support for 5G via Satellite. This means that iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be able to use satellite based 5G signals and not only through cell towers.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are set to receive one of the biggest upgrades in years. Understandably so as they are the top-end models in the lineup. We’re still months away from the iPhone 18 launch, but early predictions suggest some major developments on the Pro models. It sure sounds exciting, and worth waiting for, if you’ve been planning to splurge on an iPhone.
