OnePlus 15 launching on November 13th; will be India’s first Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 phone

OnePlus 15, which is already official in China, offers several key improvements over its predecessor, the OnePlus 13. At the forefront of these is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, with improved CPU and GPU performance, offering higher speeds, better graphics rendering, and improved power efficiency. This processor is an improvement over the Snapdragon 8 Elite found in the OnePlus 13, providing a more seamless experience for gaming, multitasking, and AI tasks. Battery life would also be a major improvement with the OnePlus 15, as it comes with a massive 7,300 mAh battery, the biggest on a mass-market OnePlus flagship to date. The OnePlus 13, in comparison, packed a 5,000mAh battery, which is still a standard for Samsung flagships. Coupled with 120W wired and 50W wireless charging, the OnePlus 15 should offer marathon battery life with rapid charging.

The screen gets an upgrade, as well. The 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED screen with 165Hz refresh rate from BOE should provide noticeably smoother animations and scrolling than the OnePlus 13’s 120Hz screen. In fact, most Android OEMs don’t match the refresh rate OnePlus offers, except for ASUS. The screen also gets better peak brightness and HDR capabilities for richer visuals. However, the 2K screen from the OnePlus 13 has been downgraded to 1.5K in the latest edition to accommodate the higher refresh rate. Whether this tradeoff works for the company would be something to observe once we review the phone.

While OnePlus has bid adieu to Hasselblad cameras, the technology seems to have improved on paper. The OnePlus 15 features a triple 50MP camera setup, bringing an additional telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom. The combination of this setup and OnePlus’s enhanced image processing algorithms, which it calls the DetailMax Engine, should offer improved low-light photography, sharper images, and more useful shooting modes. The phone also has an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner and an IP66/68/69/69K rating for water and dust resistance.

Indian consumers can expect a device designed for resilience and extreme performance. Gamers will definitely enjoy the increased refresh rate paired with the fast processor, while camera enthusiasts will be helped by adaptable camera hardware and software upgrades. The big battery and optimised chip should guarantee the phone keeps up with intensive everyday use.

Launching the OnePlus 15 early in India, much ahead of its usual January timeline for the numbered flagship release, shows the company’s ambitions to leverage the market. It has a great opportunity to capture early adopters and give them the first go at the latest Qualcomm chipset. Interestingly, iQOO 15 was all set to become India’s first Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 phone when its launch was announced for November 26th, but OnePlus seems to have one-upped the Vivo sub-brand.

The OnePlus 15 should be priced from around the Rs 60,000 mark for the base 12GB+256GB model, going up to Rs 70,000 or more for a higher configuration. This pricing, if true, could tactfully balance market-leading specs with affordability, making it a compelling option for consumers seeking the latest hardware without over-the-top prices.
