OnePlus 5T rumour zone: what to expect from the upcoming bezel-less flagship

“The OnePlus 5T is arriving on November 16th, and here’s everything we know so far”

After so many leaks, speculations and teasers, it is now common knowledge that OnePlus is gearing up to launch its next flagship, the 5T. The brand has already announced that it’ll take the covers off the OnePlus 5T at an event in New York on November 16th. The launch of the 5T follows the same strategy OnePlus followed last year, when it launched the 3T (review) a few months after launching the OnePlus 3 (review).

Keeping the ball rolling, this year’s OnePlus 5T is expected to come with improved cameras and battery. But the biggest highlight of the upcoming smartphone is the bezel-less display, which is being teased as ‘A new view’ by the brand. And the best thing is that fans can also enjoy the official release of the 5T. With its predecessor, the Shenzhen-based company set a trend by selling passes to OnePlus 5’s India launch event on its online store and gifting merchandise to those who bought the smartphone at the venue. This year, the brand is going a step ahead and will be broadcasting the global launch of the OnePlus 5T simultaneously at select PVR theatres across Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune. One can book tickets for the same for Rs 99 from BookMyShow, starting November 8th.

If you are impatiently waiting for the flagship and wondering what all it might bring to the table, you are at the right place. Here we have rounded up all official confirmations, leaks and rumours to present everything that’s known so far about the upcoming handset.

OnePlus finally hops on to the bezel-less bandwagon

As mentioned above, the very first thing that catches your attention from the recent announcement of the brand are the words, ‘A new View‘.

This is a very subtle hint to the presence of a larger and more immersive display on the upcoming OnePlus 5T. This also means that the 5T will offer the largest display ever on a OnePlus smartphone. A recent leak from GFXBench confirmed that the display panel on the OnePlus 5T will measure 6.01-inches. The leak also revealed that the screen will offer a full HD+ resolution (2,160 x 1,080 pixels) in the taller 18:9 format. Since the display on OnePlus 5 comes with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5, we can expect the 5T to come with the same.

Moreover, while the display size gets a bump over OnePlus 5’s 5.5-inch screen, the footprint of the handset would likely remain the same owing to virtually non-existent bezels. This means that the fingerprint scanner might be moved to the back panel.

The dual camera module might get an upgrade

Last year, when the OnePlus 3T arrived, it came with an improved 16MP snapper on the front as compared to OnePlus 3’s 8MP sensor. This year, it’s the dual camera setup at the back that might get the update.

Recently, Carl Pei, OnePlus’ Co-founder, took to Twitter to post a portrait possibly captured by the OnePlus 5T and it did seem like an improvement over its previous iteration. A recent Antutu leak revealed that the OnePlus 5T will come flaunting a pair of 20-megapixel cameras on the rear accompanied by a dual tone LED flash. This is an upgrade over the 16MP + 20MP combination on OnePlus 5. The selfie shooter on the new device is expected to stay the same as one on the OnePlus 5 – a 16-megapixel sensor.

At its core, it’s still the OnePlus 5

Apart from the aforementioned upgrades, the rest of specs of the upcoming smartphone are expected to remain the same as the OnePlus 5, though we aren’t complaining. The OP5 still remains a top-of-the-line smartphone in terms of the core hardware, and its successor is also expected to utilise the powerful Snapdragon 835 SoC, clubbed with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. Depending on the RAM variant, the handset is likely to come with either 64GB or 128GB storage. Having said that, we might see a change in battery specs, which is expected to get an increase in the capacity, but the exact details aren’t known yet.

The aforementioned AnTuTu leak also revealed that the phablet will ship with Oxygen OS based on the latest Android 8.0 Oreo. Also, even though the smartphone is offering an all-screen fascia, it’ll retain the 3.5mm audio socket.

Price and availability

The fact that brand is launching the OnePlus 5T soon after the launch of the OP5 suggests that it wants to make sure its fans don’t feel left out, considering most other flagships out there now offer 18:9 displays. The smartphone will be going on sale soon after the official launch. It’ll go on sale in North America and Europe starting November 21st, and in China on December 1st. In India, there will be an early flash sale of the phone on November 21st on Amazon and the brand’s online store, while the regular sales will kick off on November 28th. While the pricing isn’t out yet, OnePlus’ CEO Pete Lau has revealed on Weibo that the smartphone won’t cross the 4,000 RMB barrier, which roughly translates to Rs 39,000. A report also suggests that the phone will be priced same as its predecessor, which would make the 5T an enticing proposition.

We will bring you more updates and developments on the OnePlus 5T as and when they arrive, so stay tuned to 91mobiles.
